Travertine

Stone Design’s Travertines give your project the charm and history of the centuries. The earthy colors and gentle textures help to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for any project. It is one of the most popular stones in modern architecture and is commonly used as wall cladding, vanity tops and flooring.

Travertine is a sedimentary rock. When carbon dioxide-rich water percolates and travels through rocks in limestone areas, the water dissolves the limestone and it becomes saturated. When the environment changes significantly, such as a drop in pressure and/or change in temperature, this causes the water to release the carbon dioxide as gas with small bubbles just like carbonated water. The calcium carbonate then recrystallizes. The travertine typically remains quite textured, adding depth to the stone.

Travertine has often been called travertine limestone or travertine marble – these are the same stone, even though it is neither a limestone nor a marble. The stone is characterized by pitted holes and cavities in its surface. Although these holes and cavities occur naturally, they evoke a feeling of an aged stone. For ease of maintenance some factories fill these holes with grout during processing.
